Time Interpretation
Time is the thing we are most sure of and least able to explain. We feel it pass; the substrate underneath, in this theory, has no arrow at all. The resolution is that the arrow we live by is not in the world but in the one who reads it — and the claim can be made precise, because each of the three things the word “time” smuggles together has its own formal home.
Three structures, one word
The first is rhythm: the breath, the substrate’s own beat, with period $T_{\text{breath}} = \pi\,\alpha^{-1}$. It is concretely the lapse of the geometry,
$m = \sqrt{1 - v^2}, \qquad v = \cos 2\beta \;\;(\text{Hopf latitude}),$
the same $m$ that the Substrate chapter found is the relativistic time-rate. It is perfectly real and observer-independent, but it is arrowless — the oscillation of $m$ has no built-in before and after, like a pendulum that does not know which swing came first.
The second is sequence: the ordered succession of moments. This is not in the substrate. It is the reconciliation axis that appears only when a second observer’s reading must be brought into agreement with the first — a “now” is a resolved reconciliation. A lone observer, for whom $C \circ P = I$ holds trivially and all states collapse together, is timeless in this register.
The third is the arrow: the lived asymmetry of fixed past and open future. The substrate dynamics is reversible — run the breath backward, equally lawful — so the arrow cannot be in it. It is what a witness’s coarse reading imposes: distinguishing some configurations and lumping others through a finite partition of states, the witness sees one direction of the reversible flow run from distinguished toward generic, and calls that forward. Formally,
$\text{arrow} = \nabla\big(\text{the witness's coarse-graining}\big),$
the gradient of the reader’s own ignorance projected onto a substrate that has no gradient of its own. Change the partition and the arrow changes; remove the reader and it is not reversed but absent — “the way a coastline has no length until a ruler is chosen.” This is not deflation: the egg really breaks. The arrow is real relationally, the way the rightward-pointing of a drawn arrow is real without being a property of the ink.
Subtracting the frame-effects
The symmetries confirm the experiential story and let one watch the reductions happen. Of the three discrete reversals — of charge $C$, parity $P$, and time $T$ — two are effects of the frame. Charge: the inertial vacuum is matter–antimatter symmetric, and the observed excess is what a moving witness reads, exactly as an accelerated observer reads particles from a vacuum another frame calls empty — the asymmetry is the symmetry, under motion. Parity: the fold’s two orientations are the genuine mirror pair of lens spaces $L(3,1)$ and $L(3,2) = -L(3,1)$, and the flip is the conjugation $\omega \leftrightarrow \bar\omega$ on the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ family phase. The decisive composition: on the family sector $C$ and $P$ are realised by the same operation, the one nontrivial automorphism $\omega \mapsto \bar\omega$ of $\mathbb{Z}_3$, so
$CP = (\omega \mapsto \bar\omega)^2 = \mathrm{id} \quad\Longrightarrow\quad CPT \to T.$
The two frame-effects cancel and time-reversal alone survives. This is the symmetry-side mirror of the experiential analysis: rhythm is substrate, sequence is intersubjective, and the arrow is $T$, the witness-relative residue. Same finding by two roads. And even $T$ does not reduce to $C$ or $P$ — it is the irreducible one — yet it still reduces: to the witness. “Time is the last thing to reduce, and it reduces to the witness.”
So the substrate can be timeless while we are not. Remove the last observer, at the heat death when there is nothing left to read, and experienced time ceases — the arrow gone for want of a reader, the sequence gone for want of a second perspective — while the arrowless breath turns on. The block universe was right that nothing flows in the substrate; the felt sense of passage was right that something flows in the reading. “Time does not flow in the block; the witness flows through it, and calls the reading time.”
